How To: ESV Exhaustive Concordance

A concordance offers precise lookups on specific words and shows you where those words appear throughout Scripture. The ESV Exhaustive Concordance is just that—exhaustive, including every biblical occurrence of nearly 14,000 different words—a total of more than 340,000 entries. 

In this Help article, we will help you learn how to use the ESV Exhaustive Concordance in your Bible app.

Option 1: Lookup

Open a Bible through the Library in the main window. Tap and hold a word and select 'Lookup' to perform a Lookup.

If there is an article in the ESV Exhaustive Concordance on that word, it will be listed in the pop-up window that appears after you tap 'Lookup'. 

After selecting the ESV Exhaustive Concordance entry from the Lookup window, you will see a list of the locations where this English word appears throughout the Bible. 

Following the excerpt of Bible text, the underlying Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek word will be listed. In this example, tap on "WITNESS-H2" to see the original Hebrew word that was used in this verse. The window that opens next looks like this:

Option 2: Resource Guide

In the Resource Guide, the 'Topics', 'People', and 'Places' categories will also allow you to access some of the entries in the ESV Exhaustive Concordance. With your preferred Bible translation open in the main window, select the green 'Open Study Center' tab.

Next, select the 'Resource Guide' tab (lightbulb icon) to make sure you have the Resource Guide open. Any topics, people, or places related to the Bible verses you are viewing in the main window will be displayed in the Resource Guide in those categories.

Select an entry from 'People', 'Places', or 'Topics' to see if there is an entry in the ESV Exhaustive Concordance. In this example, we selected 'Darkness' under 'Topics' and found an entry from the concordance.

After selecting the article from the concordance, you will be linked to the appropriate entry in the ESV Exhaustive Concordance.

Option 3: Open in the Main Window

You can navigate in the ESV Exhaustive Concordance directly by selecting it in your Library and opening it in the main window. Tap the header to open the Table of Contents for the resource.

Note that there are various ways to navigate through this resource in the Table of Contents.

If you select 'Browse Dictionary', there will be a search bar in the navigation that allows you to search for an entry by English word.
