Using Interlinear Bibles

Learning an original language can be a difficult task. Olive Tree’s Hebrew-English and Greek-English Interlinear Bibles are a huge help whether you’re someone who can read Hebrew and/or Greek proficiently or have only ever used a Strong’s Bible.

This article will teach you how to use an Interlinear Bible in the Olive Tree Bible App. We will be using the ESV Greek-English Interlinear in our iOS app as an example, but these steps will work with any interlinear in any of our apps.

If you have not already done so, you can find links in this article to download your Interlinear Bible to your various devices.

Interlinear Display

The first thing you will notice when you open the interlinear is that each section of text is made up of three lines:

  • Top Line: Greek or Hebrew translation (Note: our Hebrew Interlinear lists two lines of Hebrew text. The first line is the word as it appears in the Hebrew Bible. The second line is the morphemes, which are the forms you would find in a dictionary or lexicon.)
  • Middle Line: English translation
  • Final Line: Strong's/GK number

A single line of English text follows each verse so you can see how the verse has been fully translated.

Tagged Words

We have tagged the Greek words in the text with parsing data and the dictionary definition. Tap a Greek word to get more details on it in a pop-up window:

We have also tagged the English words so you can tap on a word to get the Strong's definition in a pop-up window:

You will get a similiar pop-up window when you tap on a Strong’s number:

Search and Lookup

The interlinear makes it easy to search for a Greek or Hebrew word in the Bible text. Tap Search at the bottom of the pop-up window and the app will bring up a list of results for that Strong's number:

You can also tap Lookup at the bottom of the pop-up window to find dictionary entries from the Greek/Hebrew dictionaries that are downloaded to your device. This list contains dictionaries that have more information on the selected Greek word:
