5.9 iPad - Reading Plans

Please note that this help article is for an older version of the Bible Study app. If you are using Bible Study 6.0 or later, and you’ve installed the latest version of the app through the App Store, please click here for up-to-date help articles.

** Please note that we have updated our reading plan feature in the Bible Study App. Though many screenshots below will be similar, there may be some differences in these screenshots and what you see in your app.**

Introduction: The Olive Tree app includes a number of different reading plans to help guide you through the Bible. Each reading plan includes a calendar so you can easily view what you should read for a specific date.

How to Start a New Plan: This section explains how to start a new reading plan. In the example below, we will begin with the ESV translation open to Romans 5:1.

Tap the suitcase (My Stuff) icon to display the My Stuff menu.

Tap “Reading Plans” to display the the reading plan options.

Tap the title of the reading plan that you would like to use to display the setup screen for this plan.

In the 'Plan Name' field, enter a name for the plan. We will enter 'My Plan 01'. If this is the first reading plan you have set up, the On button will be selected by default in the 'Set As Default Plan' field.

Tap the Done button to save your named plan.

To start reading, tap the name of the plan ('My Plan 01' in the image above), and then tap the Start Reading button (in the image below) to display the day’s reading.

Following the steps outlined above, you can create multiple reading plans, based on the Chronological, M’Cheyne, Beginning-to-End models, and many other subject-based plans.

How Olive Tree Reading Plans Work.

You are not tied to a date. As the explanations and graphics above indicate, the Olive Tree app's reading plans do not tie you to specific dates. If you miss a day, you can easily make it up or choose not to. This built-in flexibility and the fact that the Olive Tree app does not make you feel guilty about missing days will encourage you to be a more faithful reader!

Reading Plan Information Screen The reading plan information screen displays the following information:

  • Today’s date
  • The reading plan name—My Plan 01 in our example
  • How many days of reading you have completed
  • The date you started the plan
  • The date you last read
  • The projected end date—the date when you will complete the reading plan
  • Continue Reading button—see below for explanation.
  • View List of Days button—see below for explanation.
  • View Today’s Assignment—see below for explanation.

Continuing Your Reading Plan: The Olive Tree app’s reading plans are smart; they remember where you left off. After you have completed a day’s reading and return to your reading plan, you will see how many days worth of reading you have completed.

To continue reading where you left off, tap the name of your plan to display the Continue Reading screen.

Tap the Continue Reading button to continue reading where you left off.

Next and Done Buttons in Text: If you are using a reading plan with multiple readings per day, you will see a Next button at the end of each segment of that day’s assignments. Tapping the Next button takes you to the next segment of the day’s reading. When you reach the end of the last segment for the day, you will see a Done button. Tapping the Done button will check off that day in your reading plan.

Which Bible Does It Use? The active reading plan uses the Bible you currently have open. If you open a reading plan with no Bible open, the app uses the last opened Bible.

Viewing List of Days in the Reading Plan: While viewing the reading plan information screen, tap the 'View List of Days' button to display the reading for a given day. Since you are just beginning this plan and have not completed any readings, none of the 'Assigned Days' in the right-hand graphic below will be marked as completed.

As you complete a reading, tap the circle to the right of that day to show that you have done so.

Viewing Today’s Reading Assignment: Open the reading plan information screen to view your assignment for a given day. Tap the View Today’s Assignment button to display the current assignment.

To Remove a Reading Plan:

* Open The Bible Study App.
* Tap on the briefcase icon ('My Stuff').
* Tap on 'Reading Plans'.
* Your reading plans will be listed under 'Reading Plans In Progress'.
* Find the reading plan you want to delete and swipe your finger to the left on it.
* A 'Delete' button will appear that you can tap on to delete the reading plan.
