iOS Basic Troubleshooting Steps
Posted by Joe C on 31 August 2011 12:46 PM

Below is a sequence of procedures that will help solve most issues that you might experience with the reader, with each step being a little more involved than the previous step. You only need to do as many steps as it takes to solve the issue you are experiencing.

Reboot your Device
Please try a simple reboot of your device. If it hasn't been rebooted in awhile it may exhibit some odd behavior with running certain applications.

Rescan Library and Annotation Indexes (BibleReader 5.1 and newer)

These steps don't change all fonts and settings back to default, like the 'Reset Options' step (below) does.

Go into general settings application for your device (this is not in BibleReader, but under the settings app on your iOS device), and scroll downuntil you see settings for the reader that is installed, and select"on" for "Rescan Library" and "Rescan Annotation Indexes".

Now, if you have version 4.2 or newer of the iOS operating system, kill the application from the Fast App Bar. To do so:
  • Double tap the home button to reveal the "Fast App" menu.
  • Select the BibleReader icon and then hold your finger on it until it shakes and displays a red negative sign on the upper right of the icon.
  • Then tap the red negative and the icon will disappear.
  • Then close the fast app bar and find the BibleReader icon from the main screen
  • Tap it and open the application to see if the problem is resolved.

Reset the BibleReader options
If a reboot or rescan does not solve the issue, please try an options reset per the following directions:

Go into general settings application for your device, and scroll down until you see settings for the reader that is installed, and select "on" for "Reset Settings".

Close other running programs
Sometimes the memory available to the BibleReader application may be limited due to other programs running in the background. Please close all other programs as per the following directions:
  • Double tap the home button to reveal the "Fast App" menu.
  • Tap the first icon and then hold your finger on it until it shakes and displays a red negative sign on the upper right of the icon.
  • Then tap the red negative and the icon will disappear.
  • Do this for all other open applications, including BibleReader if it is running.
  • Then close the fast app bar and find the BibleReader icon from the main screen
  • Tap it and open the application to see if the problem is resolved.

Check for updates of your BibleReader program
It may be possible that the problem you are encountering was fixed in an update to the program. Be sure to check to see if there might be a later version of your program on iTunes. You can do this directly on the device by opening the App Store icon, and then selecting the update tab and seeing if BibleReader is listed.

Re-download your title
Depending on your issue, you may just need to re-download the resource title (e.g. NIV, Purpose Drive Life) you are having problems with. To do so:

  • Select the Library Button
  • Select the Store button to the right of the library popup.
  • Select the "Purchased" tab from the bottom of the Store screen.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the product list and hit "Synchronize books with your Olive Tree account" to enter your username and password.
  • You should now see a list of your Olive Tree products that are compatible with your device, please select one to download it into your reader.
Please note the following about downloads:
  • Make sure that you have sufficient space for the installation.
  • If you are downloading products, make sure that you have a good signal. Move to a location that provides you with the best possible connection to the source of your wireless signal.

Reinstall your application
The most comprehensive of the suggestions is a full re-installation of your reader, and should only be attempted if the above efforts fail. Please note that uninstalling and then reinstalling the program will cause you will lose any bookmarks, highlights, and unless you have utilized the Study Sync backup system to create a copy on the Olive Tree servers. Also if you have not registered all your purchases to your Olive Tree account you may lose those as well.

Backing up your annotations to sync.OliveTree.com:

You will need an Olive Tree account to do this. If you don't have one you can create one here:

Be sure to note your username and password

  • Select the briefcase icon, and select the Sync button at the bottom of the "My Stuff" screen.
  • Enter your Olive Tree username and password where indicated
  • Your annotations should now start syncing to the server.

Log into your account from a web browser to verify the transfer of your annotations:

Then select the "Olive Tree Study Sync" link.
